Here we have a very rare find, an early LONDON TAPER QUILL float mid 1800s, ivory tipped with boiled quill body, whipped and iron eyed approx 7” these floats very rarely turn up especially in this very good original condition. Comes as found complete with Hardwood Boxwood Winder with bone inserts having shot and caps with braided horse hair line in the mid compartments with sliding lid and with Leather case with side pockets, the leather has early decorative stamped border scroll.Probably one of the rarest earliest floats for any collector. . They were skilfully crafted by only three know craftsman , John Bazin who also made London Roach poles was deemed to be the best Taper Quill maker of which this float was probably made by him, carefully whipped and joined. In excellent original condition which only adds to the value of such a rare collectible float. Not often found and to have a complete set over 150 years old a fisherman’s museum piece. I believe the earliest float winders were made from boxwood and later ones from rosewood, Beech, fruitwood etc.
Please Note in pics the excellent book WINDERS KEEPERS By Jeff Della Mura a must for the Fishing Tackle collectors showing great detail and effort into researching the Line Winders of the past, and showing much more, very interesting read..
